When Time Has to Reckon with Space

Human creativity has a habit of filling in every gap that is left for it to exploit. One of the useful things about trying to classify human artistic exploration is that the classification can reveal if there are any gaps that could be filled. Here is a very simple way of classifying what we do. We work in space, S, and time, T. In space we can create things in a range of dimensions – one, two, or three. Let’s label this SN, where N = 1, 2, or 3 according as we work in a line, S, an area, S × S, or a volume, S × S × S. When we think about spatial exploitation we have three possible dimensions to choose from. Here are the simplest static art forms that can then be characterized:
